Darwin Airport terminal celebrates 25 years!

On this day 25 years ago, the Northern Territory’s first Federal Minister, Senator Bob Collins, opened the front door of the new Darwin International Airport terminal to a marching band and an eager crowd of guests, marking an auspicious moment in aviation history in the Northern Territory. Since that day, Darwin International Airport has grown into one of Northern Australia’s greatest hubs for business, travel, tourism and leisure.
“Since opening the new terminal on 14th December 1991, Darwin Airport has seen robust change and growth, including privatisation in 1998, a major terminal expansion in 2015, diversification of its property portfolio and, more recently, a new airport developed international lounge Catalina Lounge” said Chief Executive Officer Ian Kew.
To celebrate this quarter century anniversary, Darwin International Airport recently launched a history book titled The World Flies in…and Darwin takes off! by celebrated local historians Peter and Sheila Forrest. The breadth of content and quality of this publication demonstrates the extensive history of aviation in the Northern Territory and contextualises it within broader Australian aviation history.
